Your Gamer tag is the name that identifies you across Xbox services and games. You can change your Gamertag for free once, but subsequent changes may require you to pay a fee.
Changing your Gamertag on the Xbox app mobile 2023 is easy, and you can do it from anywhere. Here’s how.
How to Change Your Gamer Tag
Changing your Gamer Tag is an easy way to give yourself an identity across Xbox Live services. It identifies you throughout the platform and is displayed in your games, apps, and in-game chats.
Microsoft allows you to change your Gamer Tag once for free. If you choose to change it again, you’ll be charged a fee (fee varies by region and currency).
You can do this through the Xbox website or the app. First, you’ll need to sign in with your Microsoft account.
1. Go to Settings
Your Xbox Gamer tag is an important part of who you are in the gaming world. But sometimes a Gamertag doesn’t quite fit and it needs to be changed.
You can change your Gamertag on the Xbox app or console. Start by pressing the Xbox button on your controller and selecting ‘Profile & System’. Then choose ‘My profile’ and ‘Customize profile’. A new page will open asking you to choose a new Gamer tag. It should be at least three letters long and can’t begin with a number.
2. Select My Profile
To change your gamer tag using an Xbox console, press the Xbox button to open the guide and select Profile & System. From there, select Customize Profile.
Enter the new Gamertag you want to use and choose Check availability. Your new Gamertag can be up to 12 characters long, including spaces, but it can’t start with a number.
If you’re changing a gamer tag that was assigned by Xbox at the time of signup, you won’t be charged a fee (fee varies by region). Otherwise, the first change is free.
3. Select Customise Profile
If you don’t like your gamer tag or it doesn’t fit you anymore, changing it is relatively simple. It won’t affect your Gamerscore or privacy settings.
You’ll see a preview of how your new gamer tag will look across Xbox services. It’s important to note that you cannot change your gamer tag to one that contains profanity or starts with a number.
If you do, you’ll need to create a new Microsoft account and start fresh with your achievements, friends, and other data.
4. Select Gamer Tag
Microsoft assigns a Gamertag to each Xbox member, but you can change it. You can do this from a computer browser on the Xbox website.
You must be signed in with a Microsoft account to do this. The first time you change your Gamertag, you won’t be charged. However, the cost varies by region and currency. Choose a name that passes community standards and is not offensive or inappropriate. Enter your new Gamertag and select Check availability.
5. Enter Your New Gamer Tag
If you’re still stuck with a decade-old handle, head over to the official Xbox website to Choose your new Gamertag. Sign in using the Microsoft account associated with your current gamer tag and type in your desired name. The next page will show you how your Gamertag will look across all Xbox services.
Your first Gamertag change is free, but changing it again will cost you (the fee varies by region and currency). Make sure you’ve really chosen the right name before making any final decisions.
6. Check Availability
Your new Gamertag will show up across all Xbox services and devices. Microsoft allows you one free Gamertag change. After that, you must pay a fee.
Gamertags must follow certain rules, including not using profanity or beginning with a number. You will get a warning if your new Gamertag violates those rules.
You’ll keep your existing games, apps, friends, and achievements when changing your Gamertag. But you may lose some progress in some games. That’s the price you pay for the convenience of a quick name change.
7. Click Claim It
Your Gamertag identifies you across Xbox services, games, and consoles. You can change your Gamertag one time for free. After that, Microsoft charges a fee for subsequent changes.
To check if your new name is available, go to the Choose your new Gamertag page on the Xbox website and sign in with the Microsoft account that’s linked to your current Gamertag. You can also review how your Gamertag will look on different devices.
Each Gamertag can be up to 12 characters long, including spaces, but cannot start with a number.
